KATIE DEITS
Master Photographer, Sculptor, Writer
Sculpture

Deits's piece entitled "As I think" is a life-size head and shoulders sculpture of a nude, androgynous person, with  an inquisitive expression. It is inscribed with quotations that have influenced Deits's personal life philosophies. Buddha taught, "All that we are is the result of what we have thought," while Bible text reads, "As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he." There are quotes on the sculpture from great religious thinkers and philosophers, Star Wars, Helen Keller,"  The Velveteen Rabbit,"  and others. Viewers have the opportunity to read the words on the flesh, to "get inside the person's head," and to absorb the quotations into the viewer's consciousness. It was accepted into the 54th All Florida Artists Juried Exhibition at the Boca Museum.

"Connection,"  (a life-size sculpture of a Lakota Indian), is an installation that represents the Native American's human-rights struggle. They believe we are connected; what is done to one part of the web of life affects all. A figure emerges from a tree trunk surrounded by four bowls: life stages, with quotations by Native-American philosophers about the cycle of life, and earth and human rights.

"Destruction" (pictured below) is a life-size installation that is paired with "Connection," above.

Katie Deits's series of sculptures called "Biography Boxes" are sculptural representations of a person's life story and achievements. Her "Path to Freedom" Biography Box series include sculptures detailing the lives and accomplishments of Mohandas Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Shadow of the Moon" by Katie Deits is a fired terra-cotta relief sculpture.

"Bleck!" is a terra-cotta wall sculpture that reflects what I am sick of hearing and thinking about, or things that disgust me, such as movie-star's escapades, Janus-faced people, liars, false friends, drunk drivers, users, politics, greedy people, the bad economy, dieting and war. Exploding our of the top of the head are "thought-vipers" as the white-streaked face, with wide-open eyes, a scowl and a projected tongue, expresses disgust.
