PRESS RELEASE:

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ.: The National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) will hold its national convention in Phoenix, Ariz., April 8-11, 2009. Thousands of artists, educators and collectors attend this popular annual event.  Arizona State University is also involved in the convention. To coincide with the convention, the council coordinates juried exhibitions of ceramic arts in various venues throughout the host city.

During the month of April 2009, Textures and Robert Roman Galleries will feature an exhibition entitled “Contemporary Text on Clay,” which brings together seven professional artists (members of NCECA) who use text and clay. Some use text as embellishment on their ceramic art pieces, while the others let the text or words become the form itself.

Each artist uses text and language in a different manner, encompassing a diverse range of thought and ideas: from the molecular energy of Ian Anderson’s piece to the momentous thoughts of Katie Deits’ “As I Think.” Holly Hanessian touches upon language, the feminine and its fragility. Julie Guyot brings up delicacies from the female as homemaker. Nazaré Feliciano weaves home rituals with social discontent. Tom Spleth lets you drink from his cups full of slurs, and James Klueg envelopes the human body with social comment in a clay bottle.

Art aficionados and collectors will have the opportunity to meet and talk with the artists at the opening of “Contemporary Text on Clay” at the Textures and Robert Roman Galleries on Thurs., April 9, from 7 to 9 p.m. Textures and Robert Roman Galleries at artspace is located at 7127 East 6th Avenue in Scottsdale. For more information, visit www.artspaceaz.com,  or call (480) 423-0888. The exhibit will be on display through April 30.

“Clay Energy” exhibit benefits ceramics scholarship program

Eaton Fine Art in West Palm Beach is hosting an exhibition of ceramic sculpture and pottery by members of the Ceramic League of the Palm Beaches, established in 1971. The league is a non-profit arts organization dedicated to advancing the education of its members in the Ceramic Arts and in promoting public interest, appreciation and enjoyment of Ceramics in the Palm Beach area.

Juried by Peter Meyerhoefer, “Clay Energy” will have works by more than 30 local artists. Meyerhoefer, of Meyerhoefer Art Events and Consulting, believes that “good art does not need to be expensive; everyone can afford to have original art in their home, and, if you love the art, that is all that matters.”

Ceramic works in the show range from wheel-thrown pottery to elaborate clay sculptures. Proceeds from the exhibition will help to fund the Ceramic League’s scholarship program.

“Clay Energy” runs from Friday, March 6 to Saturday, March 14, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.  Closed Sundays and Mondays.  Opening reception is Thursday March 12th, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.  Eaton Fine Art is located at 435 Gardenia St. in West Palm Beach, Florida 33401.  The Ceramic League of the Palm Beaches meets the third Wednesday of every month at The Craft Gallery in West Palm Beach. MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART EXHIBITION:

In 2007, Deits was awarded the South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship for Visual and Media Artists.  Her series of conceptual abstract photographs entitled "Looking Down at the Lake Park Library" was on exhibit at the library during April through May, 2007. Some of the photographs are pictured below.

They were on exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art at Goldman Warehouse in Miami During September and October 2007.

Artist's Statement – "Looking Down at the Lake Park Library"

Art may be in the seeing, in the knowing. The gift of art is all around us waiting to be recognized. It is through the eyes of artists that art is revealed.

Every day people pass by art without seeing it. Whether provided by nature, humans, animals or a collision of their forces, art is present for the finding.

A series of photographic images, which I created in 2006, is part of a body of work that I have been "finding" most of my adult life. Entitled "Looking Down," the on-going series consists of painterly or sculptural patterns, usually from parking lots, streets or sidewalks.

"Looking Down at the Lake Park Library," is a series that was discovered in a area of less than 2,000 square feet. Hundreds of people pass by these images every week, but are they are aware of the treasure of patterns, textures, compositions, and illusionary images at their feet?  (The area is defined in a large 40"x30" image entitled, "Image site plan: 2,000 square feet of the Lake Park Library parking lot.")

The compositions are 'found' or, one might say, 'discovered.' I never manipulate the "stage," only find viewpoints or angles that present the strongest compositions and most effective lighting.

The discovery is in the perception and "thrill" of texture, light, gradation of color, and natural or human-caused imagery. It is exciting to share these images with others who often ask whether they are photographs or paintings, if they are aerial photographs or taken from a satellite, and I enjoy hearing where their imagination takes them when viewing the images, as some people see figures, animals or make up stories about the images.
As a fine artist, I have worked in many mediums, such as photography, painting, film, video, text, and sculpture. My life-long "Looking Down" series is profoundly personal, daily capturing my imagination whether I am in my own neighborhood or traveling in distant lands.

PRESS RELEASE

Palm Beach Community College
PBCC EISSEY CAMPUS THEATRE LOBBY GALLERY
presents "Transpersonal Mysteries" by Katie Deits

ART EXHIBIT EXPLORES LIFE'S MYSTERIES AND EMOTIONS

February 1 – 27, 2007

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FLA.:  An exhibit titled "Transpersonal Mysteries" by contemporary artist Katie Deits opens Thursday, Feb. 1, at the Palm Beach Community College Eissey Campus Theatre. The lobby gallery is
open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and one hour before all performances. Other viewing times are available upon request. Contact the theatre office at (561) 207-5905 or visit Deits' Web site www.katied.com for more information.

This body of work deals with the artist's personal vision of life's journey and universal emotions, as well as personal and human-rights struggles. Katie Deits, an award-winning master photographer, artist,
educator and writer, is exhibiting a combination of 11 sculptures and three paintings, with some paintings echoing the themes of the sculptures.

"I create art about ideas that I am pondering," said Deits. "The mysteries of the cycle of life — of personal evolution, love, relationships, death, and those emotions and memories that accompany them — are in my thoughts and, as a result, in my art. Also, I am interested in how our thoughts affect us in a positive or negative way.

"For example, 'Mind Vipers,' a sculpture of a man with dread-lock snakes for hair, conveys that negative thoughts feel like snakes whirling within one's head.

Conversely, the 'As I Think' sculpture, of a person tattooed with positive thoughts, radiates peace and happiness," Deits added.

Human-rights issues are expressed in Lynching Still, a sculpture about the history of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.; Mohandas Gandhi sculpture addressing the Civil Rights Movement in India; and the Connection and Destruction sculptures, which deal with the Native Americans' philosophy toward Mother Earth and the pain inflicted upon
their culture.  Deits has a passion for art and strives to understand the universal theme and the indomitable human spirit.

 SOCIAL  INTERCOURSE

conversations on society

ArtCenter/South Florida

800 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach

 October 22, 2005 - November 20, 2005

Opening: October 22 7 p.m. - 10 p.m.

 PRESS RELEASE:

“Social Intercourse: Conversations on Society”

ArtCenter/South Florida exhibit stimulates personal and community dialogue

Does conversation seem superficial these days? Are meaningful discussions about social issues avoided in conversations because they might be considered too volatile? Have the voices of Americans been smothered by accusations of their being unpatriotic? Are we “burying our heads in the sand,” hoping that issues will go away if we ignore them long enough?

Four South Florida artists — Diane Arrieta, Katie Deits, Nazaré Feliciano and Jonathan Stein —  believe that only by facing social issues and through active community dialogue can positive social change be created. Their multi-media exhibit, “Social Intercourse: Conversations on Society,” at ArtCenter/South Florida in Miami Beach, opening on October 22, is guaranteed to start people talking. The exhibit includes artwork about immigration travesties, gender stereotyping, human rights, abortion, incest, superficial lies, a Christian or political façade, and “just what are family values?”

These accomplished artists bring together an array of cultural sensitivities and backgrounds. Disturbed by the current social and political climate of people communicating only in a ‘politically correct’ manner, they speak out through their art on significant issues affecting our society today. The controversial concepts are presented in video installations; multi-media sculptures and wall pieces, created from materials such as clay, wood, bread, steel, feathers, lights and photographs.

With this exhibition, these artists wish to create a better dialogue between the diverse populations of South Florida. It is their desire that viewers will reflect on the visual and audio dialogue presented and make it relevant to their own lives. Conversation can be more than light-weight niceties: To change our world for the better, it must be through social intercourse.

The exhibit “Social Intercourse: Conversations on Society” opens at ArtCenter/South Florida on October 22, 2005, from 7 to 10 p.m. It will be on display through November 20.  Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. ArtCenter/South Florida is at 800 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, Florida.

For more information, call (305) 538-7887. ArtCenter/South/Florida, a not-for-profit organization founded in 1985, advances the knowledge and practice of contemporary visual arts and culture in South Florida. ArtCenter exists to provide affordable workspace on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach for outstanding visual artists in all stages of career development. ArtCenter provides access to resource and support, creates opportunities for experimentation and innovation, and encourages the exchange of ideas across cultures and professional disciplines.
